Science Olympiad

Welcome to the Friedell Middle School Science Olympiad Website!

Friedell took 2nd Place at the State Science Olympiad Competition
at St. Olaf last year.

The Science Olympiad Team at Friedell Middle School is offered as an after school enrichment through Community Education. The team typically meets 1 to 2 days a week from 2:30 - 4:30pm after school from the middle of September through the middle of March.

Each year the team travels to three or four competitions:
The Boyceville Invitational Competition is held on Saturday, Dec 5th in Boyceville, WI.
The Regional Competition is on a Saturday morning usually in late January or early February and the site varies each year.
The State Competition is held on a Saturday in early March at St. Olaf in Northfield, MN.

Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of approximately 10 events at regionals and 19 events at the State Competition. Individual students enter from 1 to 4 events at each competition and work in teams of two to solve problems.

Science Olympiad functions much like a sports team, requiring preparation, commitment, coaching and practice throughout the year. Students choose the events they are most interested in and prepare to compete in those events. Our coaching staff consists of three science teachers, a retired IBM engineer, and other volunteers.  We are interested in having additional volunteers to help the students prepare for their events.

Each year, a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. By combining events from all disciplines, Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation.
